Spending stablecoins in United States

The United States is the deepest market for stablecoin spending, for the obvious reason that the dominant stablecoins are denominated in its currency. A US-based payer holding USDC is spending dollars at dollar prices with no conversion anywhere in the chain, which removes the main friction that exists almost everywhere else. Merchant coverage is correspondingly broad: travel platforms, hosting providers, domain registrars, gift card platforms, AI and developer tooling, and a growing set of retailers. Most of the merchants in this directory serve US customers, and the practical question is usually which network to pay on rather than whether payment is possible.

35 merchants available here

For a US payer, stablecoin spending is as frictionless as it gets anywhere: the coin is denominated in your currency, the merchant prices in your currency, and nothing needs converting.

What that removes

Everywhere else in the world, spending a dollar stablecoin involves at least one implicit currency conversion β€” either the payer bought the stablecoin with local currency, or the merchant converts it back. Conversions cost money through spreads that are rarely itemised.

In the US neither happens. A $49 invoice paid with 49 USDC is exactly that. The only cost is the network fee, which on a cheap network is a fraction of a cent.

Coverage in practice

The merchants in this directory that serve US customers span travel booking, web hosting, domain registration, VPN services, gift card platforms, AI and developer tooling, and electronics retail. For anything not directly accepting stablecoins, gift card platforms bridge to effectively every major US brand.

Physical retail acceptance remains marginal. There are payment apps that let a merchant accept stablecoins at a point of sale, and a handful of chains have experimented, but walking into a shop and paying in USDC is not yet a normal experience.

The tax point, stated once

Spending a crypto asset is generally treated as a disposal in the US, which can be a reportable event even for a stablecoin where the gain is close to zero. This surprises people who reasonably think of a dollar stablecoin as dollars.

We are not going to tell you how to handle it β€” that is a question for someone qualified who knows your situation. We mention it only because it is the single most commonly overlooked consequence of spending stablecoins in this jurisdiction.

Stablecoins in United States

Can I spend USDC in the United States?
Widely, online. Travel booking, hosting, domains, VPN subscriptions, gift cards, AI credits and several retailers all accept it from US customers. In-person acceptance at physical stores remains rare outside a small number of merchants and pilot programmes.
Do I owe tax when I spend stablecoins in the US?
Spending a crypto asset is generally a disposal for US tax purposes, which can create a reportable event even when the asset is a stablecoin and the gain is negligible. Rules and thresholds change. Speak to a qualified tax professional β€” this directory does not give tax advice.
Are there US merchants that accept stablecoins in physical stores?
A small number, usually through a payment app that settles on-chain behind the scenes. It is not yet a normal retail experience. Online acceptance is where the practical coverage is.
