Tether · issued by Tether
USDT is the most-held dollar stablecoin in the world and, in much of Asia, Latin America and Africa, the one people actually transact in. For merchant payments it is accepted almost as widely as USDC, with a different geographic centre of gravity: platforms serving global or emerging-market customers frequently list USDT first, often on Tron, where transfers have long been cheap and fast. If you hold USDT and want to spend it, coverage is good across travel, hosting, VPN services, gift cards and game marketplaces. The practical considerations are which network to use and, in Europe, whether the platform you are buying from still supports it.

USDT is the world’s most-used dollar stablecoin, and its usage pattern differs from USDC’s in a way that matters when you are choosing which to spend.
Outside North America and Western Europe, USDT is frequently the default. In markets where the local currency is unstable or dollar banking is hard to access, it functions as everyday dollar infrastructure — held in ordinary wallets, moved peer to peer, and accepted by local businesses. Merchants serving those markets list it first for straightforward commercial reasons.
That geography shows up in the directory. Global travel platforms, international hosting providers, gift card platforms with broad country coverage and game key marketplaces are the categories where USDT support is near-universal.
For years, the cheapest reliable way to move USDT was the Tron network, and an enormous amount of real-world USDT payment volume settled there. Fees are low and predictable, confirmation is fast, and merchant gateways support it widely.
Tron’s fee model has some quirks — the network uses a bandwidth and energy system where the cost of a transfer depends on account state — but from a payer’s perspective it is generally cheap and reliable. Solana and the Ethereum layer 2s now offer comparable economics with different trade-offs. Use what the merchant supports.
The EU’s markets-in-crypto-assets regime introduced authorisation requirements for stablecoin issuers serving the bloc, and USDT’s status under it prompted several EEA platforms to restrict support. The effect has been felt most on exchanges and on-ramps rather than on merchant checkouts, and it varies by platform and by country.
If you are in the EEA and plan to pay a European merchant in USDT, confirm support at checkout before you send. Where it is unavailable, USDC or EURC are usually the alternatives offered.
