Payment notes

The Student Accounts payments page lists ACH, a payment plan, Flywire for international payments, cryptocurrency, cheque and card, and for the crypto option says only: "Bentley has partnered with Coinbase to allow students and families to make payments with USDC. Click the button below to be brought to a form. Once you fill it out with basic information including the student's name and Bentley ID, you will be directed to a Coinbase payment page to complete the transaction." The card alternative carries a 2.95% domestic or 4.25% international service fee, which is the practical case for the USDC route for a family paying from abroad: a stablecoin transfer to a Coinbase checkout costs a network fee rather than a percentage of a semester's tuition. Bentley's May 2022 news release described the arrangement as "partnering with the crypto exchange Coinbase to accept three cryptocurrencies — Bitcoin, Ethereum and the stablecoin USD Coin"; the payment page today names USDC only, and a payer holding Bitcoin should confirm with the Student Accounts office before assuming the wider list still applies.

Refunds

Not documented for crypto specifically. Bentley publishes a late-payments-and-refunds page for tuition generally; a USDC payment converted through Coinbase would be refunded, where a refund is due, under the university's ordinary process rather than reversed on chain.

Stablecoin refunds are outbound payments a merchant chooses to send, not automatic reversals. There is no chargeback.

A semester of tuition is one of the largest payments most families make, and one of the few where a 2.95% card fee is printed next to the amount. Bentley’s USDC option exists in that gap.

What the university says

The Student Accounts page lists the crypto route in two sentences: Bentley has partnered with Coinbase to take payments in USDC; fill in a form with the student’s name and ID and you are sent to a Coinbase payment page. That is the whole of it. No network, no minimum, no fee beyond what the chain charges — and, alongside it, the card fees of 2.95% domestic and 4.25% international that make the comparison for you.

From three coins to one

The May 2022 announcement — one of the first of its kind at a US university — named Bitcoin, Ethereum and USD Coin. The payment page today names USD Coin. We record what the page says and note the change without guessing at the reason; a family holding Bitcoin should ask the office before assuming.

Who can use it

Enrolled students and their families, paying a Bentley bill. This is not a course you can buy with USDC from outside; it is a tuition account you can settle with it. For an international family the appeal is obvious — no wire, no card surcharge, no correspondent bank — and the caution is the usual one: confirm the network on the Coinbase page, and do not leave a deadline to the last hour.

RareSkills is the other education merchant here, at the opposite end of the scale. The education category explains why the list is short.

Verification

Verified Verified September 2026

An editor confirmed these payment options against the sources listed below.

The university's own Student Accounts payments page names USDC and Coinbase and describes the form-then-Coinbase flow; its own May 2022 news release documents the launch and the original three-asset list. That is merchant documentation naming the coin, sufficient for a verified status without a live payment, which we did not make — and could not, since the route is for enrolled students. The narrowing from three assets to USDC is recorded as found: we cite the current page for the coin list and the 2022 release for the date, and do not assert when or why Bitcoin and Ethereum dropped off the page. The processor is mapped to our Coinbase Commerce profile, Coinbase Business being its successor; no network is named by the university, so the field is empty. Student identity is required by the nature of the payment.

  2. Stablecoin added

Bentley announced tuition payments in Bitcoin, Ethereum and USD Coin through Coinbase, one of the first US universities to accept a stablecoin for tuition.

Limitations

  • USDC only. The 2022 announcement named Bitcoin and Ethereum too; the current payment page names USDC alone, and we record the current page.
  • Tuition and fees for enrolled students only — the form asks for a student name and Bentley ID. This is not a way to buy a course or a certificate from outside.
  • No network is named. The Coinbase payment page determines it; Coinbase Business checkouts typically offer USDC on Base, Polygon and Ethereum for self-custody wallets, but the university does not say so.
  • Payment posts on Coinbase's schedule and the university's; a tuition deadline should not be left to the last hour on any chain.
