Chipotle is the largest restaurant company in the United States that will take a stablecoin for lunch. It has been since June 2022. Almost nobody knows, including, as far as its own website is concerned, Chipotle.

The evidence is entirely second-hand — but it is the processor’s, not the press’s

This record deserves an unusually explicit account of its sourcing, because the merchant is silent.

We checked chipotle.com, the gift-card page and the investor site. Not one mention of crypto, digital currency or Flexa. If you were a customer trying to establish this before walking in, you could not.

What does exist is Flexa’s own material, and there is a reasonable amount of it. Flexa announced the partnership in June 2022 and put a number on it — all 2,975-plus US restaurants. Flexa’s homepage still carries the Chipotle mark today, which distinguishes a live relationship from a lapsed one; several other 2019-era Flexa merchants have quietly dropped off. And Flexa publishes a complete currency table stating that integrating its payments enables every supported currency.

That is payment-provider documentation, which this directory treats as a legitimate primary source. It is not merchant documentation, which is why the status here is “payment availability may vary”.

Which coin to bring

Flexa’s stablecoins, of those we track: USDC, DAI, EURC, GUSD and USDP. USDC is the safest choice — it is the most widely implemented across wallet apps and settles on Ethereum, Solana and Avalanche.

There is no Tether. Not at Chipotle, not anywhere on Flexa. It is absent from the currency table entirely, and if Tether is what you hold, you are swapping first.

Why the list might be shorter than that when you get there

Flexa is direct about this and it is the reason this record is not marked verified:

Many wallet apps support only a subset of the currencies listed below… the choice of payment currencies shown to your customer will often be restricted by their choice of app.

So Chipotle enables everything Flexa supports, and then your wallet narrows it. Two people in the same queue can be offered different lists. Nothing on the restaurant’s side determines it.

What this listing is actually worth

Modest, honestly, and worth saying so.

You are in a physical restaurant, at a counter, with a phone. Paying with a card takes a second. Paying with USDC requires a Flexa-enabled wallet you installed in advance, and saves you nothing — there is no discount now that the 2022 launch promotion has expired. Chipotle receives dollars either way.

The reason it matters is not convenience. It is that this is close to the only place in this entire directory where a stablecoin buys you an ordinary meal in an ordinary shop, and the food category is otherwise near-empty for good structural reasons. When people ask whether stablecoins work for everyday spending, Chipotle is roughly the whole of the affirmative case in the United States — and it is undiscoverable unless someone tells you.
