Payment notes

The merchant's FAQ states that "Our website accepts all major credit cards, PayPal, cryptocurrency & Bank of Java Beans (Loyalty Rewards)" — confirming crypto acceptance in words but naming no asset. The store's own payment-method list closes that gap: it renders USDC alongside Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, Diners Club, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Shop Pay and Amazon. Shopify builds that list from the payment types a store has actually enabled. Networks come from Shopify's documentation — Base, Ethereum, Optimism, Polygon and Arbitrum — and Shopify sponsors the gas, so there is no network fee on your side. On a bag of coffee that matters more than it sounds: a flat mainnet fee can be a material fraction of a $20 order, and here there is none. One thing to plan around. Out of the Grey sells coffee subscriptions, and Shopify does not support USDC for recurring billing, so the subscription products need a card. One-off orders are the part this works for.

Food is the thinnest category on this site, and the reason is structural rather than accidental: a restaurant takes payment at a till, and stablecoins are bad at tills. What works is the part of food retail that is really e-commerce — and a coffee roaster shipping bags is exactly that.

What is accepted

USDC, on Base, Ethereum, Optimism, Polygon or Arbitrum, through Shopify Payments. Shopify pays the gas, so there is no network fee on your side.

That last point is worth more here than at most merchants. A network fee does not scale with the purchase — sending $20 and sending $2,000 cost the same — so a flat mainnet fee is punishing on a small order and negligible on a large one. Coffee is a small order. Shopify sponsoring the gas removes the one cost that would otherwise make this a bad idea, which is covered in stablecoin payment fees.

The subscription catch

Out of the Grey sells coffee subscriptions, and Shopify does not support USDC for recurring billing. If you want coffee arriving monthly, that needs a card. The stablecoin route works for one-off orders.

This is a Shopify limitation rather than anything the roaster decided, and it applies identically to every merchant on that integration — including SoftwareKeep in this directory.

What we could not confirm

A refund policy for crypto payments. The roaster does not publish one, and Shopify separately documents that USDC orders carry no customer disputes — so there is no chargeback and any resolution is at the merchant’s discretion. For a $20 bag of coffee that exposure is trivial and we would not labour it; we record it because we record it everywhere, and because how stablecoin refunds work is the field people skip.

Nutrient Farm is the other food merchant here on the same Shopify USDC route, selling grassfed beef and organic produce out of Colorado. For everything the food category cannot reach — which is most of a weekly shop — gift card platforms are the practical bridge, and buying gift cards with stablecoins covers what that costs you.

An editor confirmed these payment options against the sources listed below.

Two independent first-party signals. The roaster's own FAQ states in prose that the website "accepts all major credit cards, PayPal, cryptocurrency & Bank of Java Beans (Loyalty Rewards)" but names no asset. The store's rendered payment-method list then names one: an entry titled "USDC" appears among the enabled payment types on both the home page and collection pages, and Shopify generates that list from the store's live configuration. We treated that signal as evidence only after checking it discriminates. Traverse Bay Farms, also a Shopify store found through the same third-party directory, renders the same icon family with no USDC entry, and three other candidates from that directory showed no crypto signal at all — their listings were stale. This one is not. Networks, gas sponsorship, the subscription limitation and the absence of customer disputes are Shopify's documented provider behaviour, not claims by the roaster. The merchant's terms of service are governed by Pennsylvania law, which is the basis for the recorded country. A 2020 image referencing Coinbase Commerce also appears on the FAQ page; we did not treat it as current evidence, because the live payment configuration says Shopify and the image is six years old.
