Stablecoin payments on Base

Base is currently the network we would point most people at for USDC payments, for unglamorous practical reasons.

The economics that matter at a checkout

A merchant checkout with a fifteen-minute price lock rewards a network that confirms in seconds and costs nothing. Base does both. The fee on a stablecoin transfer is typically a fraction of a cent, and the transaction is visible to the gateway almost immediately.

That combination is why gateway support arrived quickly and why merchants processing volume tend to enable it early.

Native USDC, not a bridge

Base carries natively issued USDC rather than a bridged wrapper, which matters for acceptance. A bridged asset carries the bridge’s risk and gateways are inconsistent about supporting it. Native issuance means the token on Base is a first-class USDC, and merchants treat it accordingly.

Where it is accepted, and how (September 2026)

We looked specifically for merchants accepting USDC on Base and found that the evidence falls into four shapes, which matter because they behave differently at the checkout.

Shopify Payments. Shopify’s USDC option, live since 2025, settles on Base and sponsors the gas. Most stores that have it never say so; you find it from the payment-icon strip Shopify renders. GrowersHouse is the exception — its own page says “USDC on Base” and tells you to arrive with funds there — and it joins Nutrient Farm, Out of the Grey Coffee and SoftwareKeep. Big brands on custom Shopify themes render no strip, so we cannot tell either way and do not list them.

Flexa and Base Pay, in person. On 16 October 2025 Flexa made Base Pay — USDC on Base from the Base app, confirmed with a passkey — a default checkout option for its merchants, naming Chipotle, Sheetz and Regal; Bealls went live four days later. Flexa’s own currency table has not been updated to show Base under USDC, so these records say “via Base Pay” rather than “any Base wallet”. This is the only route in the directory where USDC on Base buys a burrito, a movie ticket or a pair of shoes at a counter.

Gateway lists. BitPay, CoinGate, Coinbase Business, Confirmo and NOWPayments all publish Base among their USDC networks, so every merchant that defers to one of them inherits it — Newegg, Namecheap, Hostinger, Surfshark, AT&T for a phone bill, Vast.ai for GPU credit. These carry a “may vary” badge because the merchant did not name the network; the gateway did. Note that a gateway supporting Base does not force a merchant to enable it: Trezor uses Confirmo and takes USDC on Ethereum only.

Merchants that say Base themselves. OpenRouter, Venice, NanoGPT, Bitrefill, Coinsbee and CryptoRefills name the network in their own documentation — the strongest evidence, and mostly developer and gift-card merchants, which tells you who has been asking.

What we did not find: any Base-native “commerce” app with a merchant we could verify. Base’s ecosystem directory lists payments protocols, loyalty apps and checkout SDKs; the shops behind them, where they exist, did not document Base acceptance on their own sites. Blackbird, the restaurant app built on Base, takes USDC to buy its points rather than for the meal, and settles on its own layer 3, so it is not listed.

Getting ETH onto Base for fees

The setup step people miss — at every checkout except Shopify’s and Base Pay, which sponsor it. Base fees are paid in ETH held on Base, and ETH on Ethereum mainnet does not count. Bridging a small amount once is enough to cover a very large number of transactions — a few dollars will last most people a long time.

Several wallets and exchanges will withdraw ETH directly onto Base, which is simpler than bridging. If you are already withdrawing USDC to Base from an exchange, sending a little ETH the same way at the same time saves a trip.
