Dai · issued by Sky (formerly MakerDAO)

Where can you spend DAI?

DAI is the original decentralised stablecoin and still the most widely integrated one. Launched in 2017 and issued by the protocol now called Sky, it maintains its dollar peg through over-collateralisation and on-chain governance rather than by a company holding reserves in a bank. For merchant payments, DAI's advantage over newer decentralised alternatives is age: nearly a decade of integrations means many gateways list it, and it appears at crypto-native merchants far more often than its market size alone would suggest. It remains less widely accepted than USDC or USDT, and payers should check the merchant's coin list before assuming support.

What can you buy with DAI?

DAI’s relevance to spending is mostly a story about longevity.

Why an older token is often more spendable

Merchant acceptance is downstream of gateway support, and gateway support accumulates. A token that has existed since 2017 has had time to be added to every payment provider, wallet and checkout integration that ever considered adding one. Newer tokens with better distribution deals still start from zero on that list.

That is why DAI appears at merchants where you might not expect it — small hosting providers, VPN services, developer tools — usually as the third option after USDC and USDT.

The decentralisation trade-off, honestly

DAI’s design removes a corporate issuer. There is no company whose bank could freeze the reserves, no compliance department that can blacklist an address, and no jurisdiction whose regulator can order issuance to stop.

It replaces those risks with different ones: smart-contract risk, governance risk, and collateral risk if the assets backing it fall sharply and liquidations do not clear. DAI has been tested by several severe market events and held, which is genuinely meaningful evidence — but “has not broken yet” is a different claim from “cannot break.”

For spending purposes the distinction rarely matters. You hold the token briefly and hand it to a merchant. For holding, it is a real decision and one we are not going to make for you.

Practical notes for payers

DAI is available on Ethereum and several layer 2s, so cheap routes exist. Check the merchant’s network list as always. And note that a handful of gateways list DAI but settle it by converting immediately — which makes no difference to you, but explains why some merchants show it as accepted while never actually holding any.

DAI questions

Where can I spend DAI?
DAI is accepted by a reasonable number of crypto-native merchants — hosting providers, VPN services, gift card platforms and developer tools — usually alongside USDC and USDT. Coverage is narrower than the two market leaders but broader than most other alternatives. See the merchants listed on this page.
How does DAI keep its value at a dollar without a company backing it?
Through over-collateralisation and automated liquidation. Users lock collateral worth more than the DAI they mint, and if the collateral value falls too far the position is liquidated automatically. Governance adjusts the parameters. It has held its peg through several severe market events, though not without incident.
Is DAI being replaced by USDS?
USDS is the successor token in the Sky ecosystem and the two are convertible one-for-one, but DAI continues to circulate and remains the more widely accepted of the two at merchant checkouts today.
