BitPay has been processing crypto payments for merchants since 2011 and is the gateway behind a significant share of long-standing "pay with crypto" options at established retailers, registrars and travel companies. It supports stablecoins alongside major crypto assets, offers fiat settlement to a bank account, and provides the compliance posture that larger merchants tend to require.

Strengths

  • Long operating history and broad merchant integration base
  • Reliable fiat settlement to a bank account
  • Supports a useful range of stablecoins across many networks

Trade-offs

  • Custodial model — the provider holds funds in transit
  • Customer-side experience has historically been stricter than some competitors
  • Merchant onboarding is more involved than lighter-touch gateways

BitPay is the gateway most often sitting behind crypto acceptance at merchants that have offered it for a decade.

Fiat settlement is the product

Most merchants who accept crypto do not want crypto. They want the sale, in their currency, in their bank account, with a normal reconciliation process. BitPay built for that constituency early and it remains its clearest strength.

The consequence is a custodial model: BitPay receives the payment, converts it, and settles fiat to the merchant. That introduces a counterparty the merchant has to be comfortable with, in exchange for removing every operational question about holding digital assets.

Longevity as a feature

A gateway that has been operating since 2011 has integrations everywhere, a support organisation, and a compliance posture built over years of dealing with banks. For a large retailer evaluating crypto acceptance, those matter more than a slightly lower fee.

For payers

BitPay checkouts are strict about matching the exact invoiced amount and the specified network, somewhat more so than lighter-touch gateways. Send precisely what the invoice says, on the network it says, and do not round. Underpayments and wrong-network sends both require support intervention.

BitPay questions

Does BitPay let merchants receive dollars instead of crypto?
Yes. Fiat settlement to a bank account is one of BitPay's defining features and the main reason conventional retailers use it.
Which stablecoins does BitPay support?
Several dollar stablecoins across multiple networks. The exact list changes; check BitPay's own supported-currencies page before relying on a specific coin.
