Stablecoin payments on Optimism

Optimism is a capable layer 2 whose merchant coverage lags its technical standing, which is worth knowing before you move funds there specifically to spend them.

What it is good at

Everything the other major layer 2s are good at: cheap transfers, fast confirmation, Ethereum compatibility, and natively issued USDC. There is nothing wrong with paying on Optimism where a merchant supports it.

The coverage caveat

Gateway integrations are added one at a time, and Optimism has generally been added later than Base and Polygon. A merchant advertising USDC acceptance may well not have it enabled.

This is the one network where we would specifically advise checking the merchant’s list before bridging funds. Arriving with a balance on a chain the merchant does not accept means either bridging again or swapping — both cost money and neither is fun with a countdown running.

Where it is accepted, and how (September 2026)

We looked for merchants taking USDC on Optimism specifically. It is the thinnest merchant-led list of any major network in this directory — thinner than Arbitrum’s — and the pattern is the same: Optimism is an option on a gateway menu far more often than something a merchant chose to say.

Merchants that name Optimism. Four. 3DNS is the only merchant in the directory for which Optimism is the network: it registers real .com and .xyz domains, tokenises them on Optimism, and its checkout takes “a credit card, ETH, or USDC on Optimism”. RANDHOST lists USDC on Ethereum, BNB Smart Chain, Solana, Polygon, Arbitrum, Base and Optimism on its payments page. Genghis names nine networks for USDC on its dedicated USDC page, Optimism among them, with a per-network fee-and-speed table. Bidali lists “Optimism Network — USD Coin (USDC), Tether USDT” on its currencies page. All three sell small things — servers by the month, gift cards — where a cent of gas matters.

Gateway lists. BitPay, CoinGate, Coinbase Business, NOWPayments and Shopify Payments publish Optimism among their USDC networks. Newegg, Namecheap, Dynadot, airBaltic, CyberGhost, AT&T, Vast.ai, Cherry Servers, Prepaid-Host and the Shopify USDC stores (Nutrient Farm, Out of the Grey Coffee, SoftwareKeep) carry it on that basis, and most of those records say “may vary” because the merchant never named a network.

Who leaves it out. The gift card platforms that publish their own menus — Bitrefill, Coinsbee, CryptoRefills — list Base and Arbitrum for USDC but not Optimism, which is the clearest signal of where it sits in merchants’ priorities. Stripe’s stablecoin checkout and Flexa’s in-person network do not list it. HOSTKEY uses BitPay and states Ethereum only; Trezor and Alza pin USDC to Ethereum. GrowersHouse runs Shopify Payments, which supports Optimism, but its own page tells buyers to arrive with USDC on Base.

What we did not find. An Optimism-native consumer merchant beyond 3DNS. Base — built on the same OP Stack — has Shopify, Flexa’s Base Pay and Coinbase behind it; Optimism itself has no equivalent distribution deal, and its ecosystem’s commercial activity is in DeFi and governance rather than shops. For a payer the advice in the intro stands: this is the network to check before bridging to, because the acceptance is real but borrowed.

Fees

ETH on Optimism. Not mainnet ETH, not Base ETH. A few dollars is plenty.
