Payment network
Tron is, by transaction count, one of the most heavily used stablecoin payment networks in the world, overwhelmingly because of USDT. In many markets it is simply how dollars move: cheap, fast, reliable, and supported by essentially every exchange, wallet and payment gateway that touches USDT. If you hold USDT and want to spend it, Tron is very likely to be among the networks your merchant supports. Its fee model is unusual — costs depend on a bandwidth and energy system rather than a simple gas price — which occasionally surprises newcomers but rarely amounts to much in practice.
Tron’s importance to stablecoin payments is hard to overstate and easy to miss if your view of crypto is centred on Ethereum.
A very large share of the world’s USDT transfers settle on Tron. In markets across Asia, Africa and Latin America, USDT on Tron functions as everyday dollar infrastructure — used for remittances, savings, business settlement and merchant payment by people who would not describe themselves as crypto users at all.
Merchant gateways support it accordingly. If a platform accepts USDT, Tron is very likely on the list.
Tron does not charge a straightforward gas fee. Transactions consume bandwidth and energy, resources you obtain by staking TRX or, if you have not, which are charged as a TRX fee.
For a payer this usually means: keep a small TRX balance and transfers work. It also means a wallet holding only USDT and no TRX may be unable to send — the same trap as Ethereum, arriving by a different mechanism.
The cost of a USDT transfer on Tron has varied over time as the network adjusted its resource parameters. It remains inexpensive relative to Ethereum mainnet, and comparable to the cheap layer 2s.
Tron addresses begin with T and are visibly different from Ethereum’s. That is a genuine safety feature: you cannot accidentally paste an Ethereum address into a Tron withdrawal and have it succeed. The transaction simply will not construct.
