Shopify Payments

Shopify Payments is not a crypto gateway that a merchant chooses. It is the checkout Shopify merchants are already using, and in June 2025 USDC quietly became one of the local payment methods available inside it.

That distribution story is the whole significance. Every other processor in this directory has to persuade a merchant to integrate it. This one is a toggle.

What the customer sees

A USDC option at checkout, payable from hundreds of wallets, on guest checkout or through Shop Pay. They choose a network — Base by default — and pay. They are not charged gas. Shopify absorbs it.

That last point is easy to skim past and it is the most important design decision here. The commonest reason a crypto checkout gets abandoned is a customer discovering that a $30 order carries a $4 network fee. Removing it makes the flow behave like a card payment, which is what mainstream buyers expect.

What the merchant gets, and gives up

Payout arrives in local currency on the normal schedule unless the merchant deliberately opts to claim USDC to an external wallet. No new reconciliation, no crypto on the balance sheet, no treasury policy required.

The tradeoffs are real and documented:

• No subscriptions. USDC cannot pay for a subscription product. If your store is subscription-first, this does nothing for you.
• No disputes. Customers cannot open a dispute on a USDC order. For the merchant that is chargeback immunity; for the buyer it is the loss of a protection they have on every card payment. Say so in your refund policy rather than letting people find out.
• No partial capture, which complicates split shipments.
• USDC only. No USDT, which is the more widely held asset in much of Asia and Latin America.

Geography is narrower than “worldwide”

The announcement language was global; the documentation is not. Most US states qualify but Alaska, New York and Texas do not. Mexico, most of Europe and Hong Kong are in. Much of Asia, Africa and South America is not, and the account representative’s residential address has to be in an eligible country, which catches out merchants incorporated in one place and run from another.

How it compares

Stripe underpins this and offers the same capability directly to non-Shopify merchants, with a slightly wider asset list. Coinbase Commerce is the crypto-native alternative and supports more assets, but is contracting geographically rather than expanding. For a Shopify store in an eligible country, there is little reason to add a separate gateway just to accept USDC.
