Book flights with USDC

Air travel is the largest single purchase most people will attempt with a stablecoin — and the one where the absence of a chargeback matters most.

Booking a flight with a stablecoin is technically straightforward and commercially unusual, and the gap between those two facts is where the interesting detail lives. A handful of platforms make it work, and they do it in two quite different ways. Crypto-native travel agencies like Travala and Alternative Airlines are intermediaries: they hold inventory or resell it, they take your USDC, and they issue the ticket. Airlines that accept directly, of which there are very few, put a crypto option on their own checkout. The distinction matters more than it sounds, because it determines who you are actually contracting with when something goes wrong. And with air travel something goes wrong reasonably often — schedule changes, cancellations, involuntary downgrades, the airline going under. In the card world your final backstop for all of that is a chargeback, and for large purchases it is a genuinely valuable one. Pay in USDC and it does not exist. Your recourse becomes the platform's own refund policy plus whatever passenger-rights legislation covers the route, and both of those are considerably slower and narrower than a call to your card issuer. That is the trade this page is really about, and the fare comparison is secondary to it.

Before you pay

  • There is no chargeback. On a four-figure ticket, that is the single most important line on this page.
  • Check who issues the ticket — an intermediary's refund policy is not the airline's.
  • Refunds in crypto are outbound payments the platform chooses to send. Ask about the mechanism and the timeframe before booking, not after.
  • Consider paying the deposit or a cheap leg in USDC and the expensive ticket by card, if the platform allows a split.
  • Airline-direct crypto acceptance is usually regionally restricted — Emirates' is UAE residents only.

Two different things are on this list

Travala and Alternative Airlines are crypto-native travel platforms. They exist because people hold crypto and want to travel, they take a wide range of assets, and they have been doing it for years. You are buying from them.

airBaltic is an airline that put a BitPay button on its own checkout in 2014 and never took it off. You are buying from the carrier.

Destinia sits in between — a conventional Spanish travel agency that happens to publish an unusually specific list of accepted stablecoins.

For a straightforward point-to-point ticket the difference is invisible. It becomes very visible the moment a schedule changes, because an intermediary’s obligations to you are set by its own terms, and airlines are frequently less accommodating to a passenger holding an agency booking than to one who booked direct.

The chargeback question, stated plainly

We keep returning to this across the directory and it matters more here than anywhere.

A flight is expensive, is bought well in advance, and is delivered by a third party who may cancel it. That combination is precisely the risk profile credit card chargebacks were built for. Airlines fail; when Monarch and Thomas Cook collapsed, card-paying passengers recovered money that cash-paying passengers did not.

Paying in USDC removes that. Not diminishes — removes. The transaction is final, the platform holds the money, and if the platform also fails you are an unsecured creditor.

This does not mean don’t. It means that on a four-figure international itinerary, the several percent you might save on foreign-exchange spread is being weighed against a protection worth considerably more than several percent. Make that trade knowingly.

A reasonable middle path, where the platform allows it: pay in USDC for the cheap domestic leg or the refundable hotel, and put the long-haul ticket on a card.

Airline-direct acceptance is still barely a thing

Emirates is the most prominent recent entrant and it illustrates the pattern. Crypto payment went live in July 2026 through Crypto.com Pay. It is real, dated and announced by both parties. It is also restricted to eligible UAE residents booking in dirhams, and neither Emirates nor Crypto.com will say which assets are eligible — so we claim no stablecoin for it at all.

That is what “airline accepts crypto” usually means in practice: one country, one currency, an account-based provider, and no published asset list. Useful if you live there. Irrelevant if you do not.

Meanwhile Trip.com was widely reported to have launched USDT and USDC payments in late 2025, and its own payment documentation still lists no cryptocurrency whatsoever. We list it with an empty coin field and an explanation, because a directory that promotes reported acceptance to confirmed acceptance eventually sends someone to a checkout that is not there.

Refunds are outbound payments, not reversals

Worth understanding mechanically. When a merchant refunds a card payment, the money travels back along the rails it came on, automatically. When a platform refunds a stablecoin payment, somebody initiates a new transfer to an address.

That means it can be slow, it can go to the wrong place if the address you paid from was an exchange deposit address that has since been recycled, and it can be denominated differently from what you paid if the platform converted at the time of booking. Ask three questions before you book anything expensive: will a refund come back in USDC or as credit, to which address, and on what timeframe.

Platforms that answer those clearly are the ones to use.

Frequently asked questions

Which airlines accept USDC directly?
Very few, and those that do usually restrict it. airBaltic has accepted crypto through BitPay for years and is the clearest example. Emirates launched crypto payment in July 2026 but limits it to eligible UAE residents booking in dirhams, and names no specific stablecoin. For most routes you will be booking through an intermediary rather than the airline.
What happens if my flight is cancelled and I paid in USDC?
You rely on the platform's refund policy and any statutory passenger rights on the route. There is no chargeback. Refunds, where offered, are outbound payments the platform chooses to make — usually back to the paying address, sometimes as credit. Confirm which before booking.
Is it cheaper to book flights with stablecoins?
Not inherently. Some crypto-native agencies run promotions or loyalty discounts, and some travellers save on foreign-exchange spread versus a card in another currency. But the fare itself is not usually lower, and any saving should be weighed against the loss of chargeback protection.
Can I book flights with USDT instead?
At the intermediaries, often yes — Travala accepts both. Airline-direct acceptance is rarer and, in Europe, constrained by the same MiCA rules that pushed hosts off Tether.
