Luxury that accept stablecoins

Luxury was the sector that announced crypto acceptance loudest in 2021 and 2022, and it is the sector where checking what is still true matters most. Sotheby's takes USDC for lots it marks as crypto-payable, but only from five named exchange custodians and never from a self-hosted wallet. RM Sotheby's takes it for collector cars through BitPay, with a pre-approved BitPay ID required before the auction. FARFETCH has run stablecoin payments through Triple-A since 2022. Gucci, Balenciaga, Off-White, TAG Heuer and Hublot all announced crypto in 2022 and none has a page we can read today that names a stablecoin. The records here are built around conditions — identity, custodian, timing — because at these prices the conditions are the product.

Every cell comes from the merchant's record. "Pairing not documented" means the merchant lists the coin and some networks but does not say which chain the coin runs on; confirm at checkout. Evidence dates are when an editor last read the merchant's own page.

Luxury is where stablecoin acceptance is most conditional, and the conditions are the record.

The auction model

An auction house does not have a checkout; it has an invoice and a compliance department. Sotheby’s crypto process runs accordingly: the lot must be marked as crypto-payable, the winning bidder asks to pay in BTC, ETH or USDC, provides a wallet address at one of five approved custodians, has photo ID on file, and receives a Coinbase Commerce link to pay within ten business days, in a Monday-to-Friday morning window in New York. RM Sotheby’s, the collector-car arm, uses BitPay instead and wants a pre-approved BitPay ID before the sale; the exchange rate is locked for fifteen minutes once the invoice is open.

The fashion model

FARFETCH’s stablecoin route is a white-labelled Triple-A checkout inside its own site, launched in 2022 across 37 countries and, by its gateway’s account in 2026, still live and performing. The fashion houses that announced BitPay the same year — Gucci, Balenciaga, Off-White, TAG Heuer, Hublot — have gone quiet on their own pages, which is why they are absent.

What to check

Whether the specific lot or product is eligible. Whether your wallet qualifies — Sotheby’s refuses self-custody outright. Whether identity is already verified, because it will be required. And the payment window, which at an auction house is measured in days and at a gateway in minutes. The stablecoin is the easy part.

Luxury questions

Can I pay Sotheby's in USDC?
For lots marked "Cryptocurrency Payments", yes — BTC, ETH or USDC through a Coinbase Commerce link, but only from an account at Coinbase, Coinbase Custody, Fidelity Digital Assets, Gemini or Paxos. Self-hosted wallets are refused, government ID must be on file, and payment is due within ten business days, during New York morning hours. It is the most conditional stablecoin checkout in this directory, and the conditions are Sotheby's own.
What about Gucci, Balenciaga and the LVMH watch brands?
All announced BitPay acceptance in 2022 — Gucci and Balenciaga in select US stores, TAG Heuer and Hublot online in the US. None publishes a page today that names a stablecoin, and their sites refuse automated reading, so none is listed. If one of them still takes USDC at the counter, we have no way to show you where it says so.
Why are watches and bullion in their own categories?
Because they have enough documented merchants to stand alone and because the buying questions differ — network fees on a gold order, price locks on a watch. This hub covers what is left: auctions, fashion and cars, where the merchant's conditions rather than the coin list are what a buyer needs to read.
