Stablecoin payments on XRP Ledger

The XRP Ledger has been settling payments continuously for over a decade, and its stablecoin story is recent.

Until RLUSD launched, the XRP Ledger’s role in stablecoin payments was marginal. Native issuance changed that — RLUSD on the XRP Ledger gets seconds-fast settlement, sub-cent fees and access to the ledger’s built-in exchange for currency conversion during a payment.

Whether that translates into merchant checkout adoption depends on gateway support, which is currently thin. The institutional and cross-border corridors are where the volume is.

Account mechanics worth knowing

Reserves. Accounts must hold a minimum XRP balance to exist, and a little more for each trustline. This is deliberate anti-spam design, and it means you cannot fund an XRP Ledger account with exactly the amount you intend to send.

Trustlines. As on Stellar, holding an issued currency requires an explicit trustline. Your account needs an RLUSD trustline before it can receive RLUSD.

Destination tags. The equivalent of Stellar’s memo. Required by essentially every exchange and custodial service. Omitting one is the most common way people lose track of an XRP Ledger payment.

Practical advice

If a merchant offers XRP Ledger settlement and you already operate there, it is fast and cheap. If you do not, the account setup — funding a reserve, establishing a trustline — is more friction than paying on a network you already use. Check what else the merchant accepts first.
